Overview

We'll start our workshop in Hanksville, photographing Utah's badlands, amazing rock hoodoos, and otherworldly formations. Then, we'll travel to Escalante, Utah, where we will be hiking through some of the best slot canyons in the world for photography, in addition to photograhing more of the beautiful Utah desert.

Each participant will be loaned a star tracker, which you will learn how to use to create noise-free night photos. Star tracking is quickly becoming the best way to shoot night photos, and you'll get hands on instruction to show you exactly how to use one. This workshop is specifically planned around shooting the Milky Way panorama, which is only available in the spring.

Lodging is included on this workshop. We'll be staying at a house in Hanksville, Utah for three nights and Escalante, Utah for two night. We will hang out and edit photos together. Most days will be spent editing photos, while the mornings and evenings will be spent out shooting in the field.

We will have the opportunity to edit photos each day during the daytime. This will give you plenty of time to learn the workflow for editing Milky Way Panoramas as well as daytime images and ultimately leave the workshop with multiple photos you are happy with.

We will be doing some moderate hiking on this workshop. While most of the hiking will be flat, the ground may be uneven, and hikes may be up to 5-6 miles round trip.

Who is This Workshop For?

Your Image

All Skill Levels

By having a small group size, you'll get lots of 1 on 1 time where you can learn the skills you need to improve your photography. Beginner photographers will learn everything they need to know in order to capture great photos. Intermediate photographers will aquire the skills needed to take their photos to the next level. Advanced photographers will pick up skills that they can add to their current workflow to create even better photos.

Adventure Seekers

On this workshop, you'll get to experience otherworldly places that are outside of what you could find in a simple Google search. Each location we will be visiting has been scouted numerous times, and Austin will put you in the right spot at the right time to capture amazing photos. Sometimes, this means hiking to lesser known areas in order to capture epic images.

Intermediate Fitness Level

This workshop is my workshop with the most hiking. We'll be hiking through many of the best slot canyons in the world for photography. Some canyons are very narrow, while others may have a multiple mile approach to reach. If you are used to hiking, there are no hikes on this workshop that will give you any trouble. If you're concerned about your fitness level on this workshop, contact Austin for more information.

Schedule

Our schedule will be kept flexible in order to adjust for weather conditions. We will visit different areas at different times depending on weather conditions. However, a rough schedule is included below. Once you've registered for the workshop, you'll recieve a welcome PDF with more detailed information.

Day One (Sunday, April 7th)

The group will meet at our house in Hanksville at 4pm on Sunday evening. We'll drop our bags off, briefly chat about the workshop, and head out to shoot sunset just outside of Hanksville. We'll be back for a quick night of sleep after sunset.

Day Two (Monday, April 8th)

If clear skies permit, we'll be getting up in the middle of the night to visit our first location for a Milky Way panorama. We'll likely shoot the Milky Way through sunrise, and then we will return to rest and begin learning about processing. We will have the option of visiting a new location for sunset as well.

Day Three (Tuesday, April 9th)

Again, we'll be up early for the Milky Way (weather permitting) and sunrise. We'll spend the day resting and processing, and then head out for sunset.

Day Four (Wednesday, April 10th)

Pending weather conditions, we'll have an early rise, for Milky Way and sunrise. Then, we'll be heading to Escalante, Utah. You'll have the day to drive through Capitol Reef National Park and meet at our house in Escalante around 4PM.

Day Five (Thursday, April 11th)

Weather permitting, we may shoot Milky Way and then sunrise, or we'll head out early and hike through a beautiful slot canyon. After that, we'll head back for more editing followed by another shoot at sunset.

Day Six (Friday, April 12th)

Answer Body

*Schedule will be kept flexible, and it is very unlikely that we will shoot Milky Way every single night. Also, on days where weather doesn't look favorable for sunrise, we may choose to get a little extra sleep and head out for a longer hike instead. My job as an instructor is to put you in the right place at the right time to capture the best photos, and I'm going to push and pull all the right strings to do so. During the day, you'll have ample time to rest up, and most participants don't attend every editing session.

This allows me to successfully teach both beginners, intermediates, and aspiring pros all in the same workshop!

About your instructor

Austin James Jackson is a professional photographer based in Southern Utah. Austin has been shooting photos for over 10 years, and has spent the last 6 years helping his clients become better photographers.

I take my job as your workshop guide very seriously. I am certified in Wilderness First Aid, ensuring that in the rare event of an accident, you will be in good hands. It is my goal as an instructor to make sure you leave my workshop not only with some great photos, but also that you leave as a better photographer. The group size in my workshops is kept small so that I can work hands on with you and make sure you leave with a variety of new skills.

My photo workshops are run a bit differently than a lot of traditional workshops. Unlike many workshops, where you are brought to a location, and told exactly how to frame your photo and exactly the settings to use, I let you, the photographer, find the shot that makes your heart sing. I'll bring you to great locations, and then assist you in finding a composition that works for you. Then, I work directly with you to help dial in your composition, ultimately allowing you to shoot your photo, instead of you shooting mine. Throughout the process, I'll always be by your side to help with any questions you have, and to give you my feedback to help you become a better photographer.

I can't wait to work with you!

What skill level do I need to be to attend the workshop?

Austin's workshops are limited to just 5 students, which gives plenty of individual time to work with each student. By having small workshop sizes, it allows for any kind of photographer, from brand new, intermediate, or even semi-professional photographers to find success and improve their photography.

What should I do about transportation?

While transportation is not included, participants will often times choose to ride together. If you would like to find someone to carpool with, please email Austin before the workshop and he will connect you with the other participants.

What are the editing sessions like?

Most students will choose to bring a laptop with Photoshop and Lightroom installed. On this workshop, we'll have up to five editing sessions. The first couple sessions will be more about you learning a workflow that helps you create amazing photos, and the later sessions will be about editing your own photos. Austin will be right there to help you work through any problems, and ultimately come away from the workshop with multiple awesome photos. You aren't expected to attend every editing session, but you are more than welcome to if you have the energy!

I just purchased a camera and want to learn how to use it. Can I attend this workshop?

Yes, because the workshop size is very small, you'll get plenty of individual attention to help you learn about photography.

I already have lots of experience with both shooting and editing. What will I get from this workshop?

In addition to being guided to the best locations, you'll also learn a lot on the workshop. Even experienced photographers will pick up a lot of information that will help you create better photos.

How difficult is the hiking?

Most hikes are less than two miles, but a couple of the hikes may be between 4-6 miles. The terrain is usually flat, but sometimes uneven ground is present. Most average "weekend" hikers will be totally fine on this workshop. Please contact Austin if you have additional questions or concerns about fitness level.

My wife/husband/friend wants to tag along. Can they do that?

Anyone shooting photos must be registered for the workshop. Some workshops, you may be able to bring a guest with you, but please contact Austin ahead of time.

What is the closest airport?

If you're flying in to join us, it's recommend to fly into Salt Lake City (SLC).

I need to cancel my spot in the workshop. Can I get a refund?

A full refund is offered up to 90 days in advance of the workshop. After 90 days, your deposit can't be refunded unless your spot is filled prior to the workshop start date.

Can I bring my drone?

Yes! This is an excellent area for aerial photography. However, the workshop does not include any instruction on drones. If you bring one, I'm happy to point you in the direction of some aerial photos, but by no means is a drone necessary for the workshop.
